Whitleys-Peanuts

Virginia’s Finest Party Foods

Expecting guests this weekend for the big game? Maybe you’re headed to a party at a friend’s house Sunday for the Super Bowl and need to bring some nibbles for the game (or the commercials…whatever it is you like to watch…we don’t judge!).

Consider serving some of Virginia’s finest, Virginia-grown goodies. And not just for the Super Bowl!

Here are some of our favorites (and recipes others have compiled featuring these Commonwealth concoctions)!

Whitley’s Peanut Factory, based right here in Gloucester just up the road from Warner Hall, features all you need for the peanut lover. Roasted. Salted. Chocolate covered. You name it and they feature it.

The company has been around for over 25 years, hand cooking all of their Virginia peanuts to pure perfection.

You absolutely can’t talk about the core Virginia foods without touching on the amazing seafood that comes from our Chesapeake Bay waters. That’s one of the reasons we love the Blue Crab Bay Co. so much. Based on the Eastern Shore, the Blue Crab Bay Co. was started by a young woman in 1985 with an idea of selling her spice blends for clam and crab dishes. Today, the Blue Crab Bay Co. can be found in retailers throughout the South and online, featuring those seasonings, Bloody Mary mixes, appetizer kits, soups, chowders and more.

Nothing says Virginia like a good ole Smithfield Ham. Since the turn of the century, this company has been a staple at holiday meal tables across the country. Best part? It’s located about an hour from Warner Hall. When you think Smithfield Hams, think sweet potato ham biscuits, mac and cheese, southern grits and casseroles!

Pierce’s PITT Bar-B-Que. If you know barbecue, you’ve probably heard of Pierce’s. You may have even heard of their own BBQ sauce which troops deployed around the world have been known to request in their care packages! Right off of I-64 in Williamsburg, Pierce’s has the best recipe to add some “sauce” to your special party. Add some homemade biscuits and coleslaw, and your guests will be rubbing their bellies and asking for more.

“Historic Ayrshire is unique in the region as a working farm that has met the 21st Century with one foot firmly planted in the 19th.” That’s how they describe their business in Upperville, Va. and we loved it so much we had to share just that! Ayrshire has specialized in rare breeds of livestock and heirloom fruits and vegetables. With a comprehensive online store offering organic chicken, Heritage beef, Certified Humane Veal, sausage and even some special goodies for your “furry” guests, Ayrshire Farm will surely provide unique local taste, either as an ingredient, or a staple in your next gathering.

Creating, manufacturing and selling high-quality unique Virginia specialty and gourmet foods, the West Point-based Integrity Food Group offers various flavors of homemade cheese straws, fruit butters and marmalades, artisan pastas, flavorings and even gluten-free baking mixes! It’s a semi-homemade, Virginia-made mecca of options.
