Expert Virginia mushroom forager Steve Haas to speak on “The Magic of Mushrooms — Foraging for Your Favorite Fungus in the Wild.”

Noted mushroom-preneur Steve Haas, who forages for tasty fungi in Virginia’s woods and grows organic mushrooms through his farming business, will be the featured speaker at the Inn at Warner Hall’s Dinner and Discussion event in June.

The Dinner and Discussion, called “The Magic of Mushrooms — Foraging for Your Favorite Fungus in the Wild,” will be June 24. Limited seats are available for the gathering, which begins at 5:30 p.m., with Haas’ lecture and discussion at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. Dinner, of course, will feature mushrooms.

Haas is considered the region’s most trusted and reliable source of wildcrafted and foraged mushrooms. It’s a craft handed down through generations of Haas family members, who emigrated to the U.S. from Germany in the late 18th century.

Haas cultivates a wide variety of gourmet culinary and potent medicinal mushrooms, growing most of them indoors and some species outdoors whenever possible.

Mushrooms that he cultivates himself and fungi he harvests from the wild are sold at farmers’ markets in Richmond and the Northern Neck, roughly an hour drive from Warner Hall.

With access to thousands of acres of old growth hardwoods across Virginia, Haas is able to secure a steady supply of seasonal mushroom delicacies. The mushrooms Haas cultivates are chemical- and pesticide-free.

Haas’ mushrooms found in the wild are prized by restaurants, natural medicine practitioners and mushroom lovers. He also offers guided wild food forays for individuals and groups.

The Inn at Warner Hall Dinner and Discussion series is held several times a year featuring speakers presenting on topics of interest. A group discussion follows before closing with complimentary wine and a buffet dinner.
